Growing up wanting to be a lawyer John Adams inaugural job was as a schoolmaster. In 1774 and 1775 he participated in the First and Second Continental Congress. He was the first vice president of the United States in 1789 and later became the succor president in 1797. Although John Adams was not as respected as other leaders resembling George Washington, he was still a man of great qualities. He attended many conventions and was a Boston representative in the General Court. He was also the chairman of the Continental control board of War and Ordnance in 1776. He helped make the agreement of Paris of 1783 possible and spent several years in France discussing it. He pushed for the United States rights to the Grand Banks and made it clear that the United States was now officially an independent nation.

President Adams caused some of his own problems, however, because of his prickly personality.
