In late 1820, Wagner was enrolled at Pastor Wetzels school where he received slightly piano instruction from his Latin teacher. He could not negotiate a proper scale, but preferred playing household overtures by ear. After Geyer died in 1821, when Wagner was eight, he was sent to the Kreuz Grammar train in Dresden, paid for by Geyers brother.
