De Beers Diamond Company
HISTORY
The De Beers Diamond Company was founded in 1888 by a man named Cecil Rhoades. He got his start in the business when he started selling mining supplies to taprs in South Africa. Once Rhoades had deliver enough money, he bought various mines in the region that were already producing rhombs. He then brokered a deal with the London ground rhombus syndicate, which agreed to buy all his diamonds at a fixed price. By this time Cecil Rhoades owned all the diamond mines in South Africa, and was a very wealthy man. When Rhoades died in 1902 De Beers produced 90% of the worlds diamonds. Today De Beers produces approximately 40% of the worlds supply of diamonds.
DE BEERS CANADA
De Beers has been active in Canada for almost 50 years. The president of De Beers Canada is Jim Gowens. The company began in Canada as a small multitude of researchers and scientists exploring for possible diamond deposits. This small group searched the northern parts of Canada relentlessly until finally diamonds were found. De Beers now has many offices and operations across Canada. They currently have two diamond producing mines in Canada. One mine is the snarl up Lake mine the other(a) is the overlord mine.
SNAP LAKE MINE
The Snap Lake mine is De Beers first mine outside of South Africa.



It was built on the shores on Snap Lake, about 220 kms northeast of Yellowknife. The mine is Canadas first electric resistance diamond mine. The mine is only accessible by plane. It cost 1.4 billion dollars to construct the mine. The total size of the mine is d hectares. The mine produces approximately 1.4 million carats a year.

VICTOR MINE
The Victor mine is located in the James Bay lowlands of northern Ontario. It is Ontarios first diamond mine. The Victor mine is an outspoken pit mine. It cost approximately 1 billion dollars to construct. The size of the mine is 15 hectares. Victor mine produces approximately 600 000 carats a year.
